My name is Jeff Hess and I’m a biblioholic. I own hundreds of books. Not valuable books, mostly Science Fiction paperbacks and text books, tomes rescued by the bag from library book sales. A few years ago, in the interest of not burying myself, I began reading more books from the library and taking notes. My electronic chapbook was born.
This is a passage I copied from Story: Substance, structure, style and the principles of screenwriting by Robert McKee.
A story event creates meaningful change in the life situation of a character that is expressed and experienced in terms of a value and achieved through conflict.

I heard this piece the other night on NPR. Robert Reich succinctly lays out how it is that we have a Dow Jones average in the stratosphere and American citizens who feel that their financial life is stalled or as Reich puts it, why: the Bush tax cuts have delivered for Wall Street but done zilch for America’s Main Streets.

I’m constantly tossing interesting websites into what I call my blogpile. Some of them find their way here in the form of regular posts, but more often than not they languish and get buried deeper in the pile. The end result is that I have to go back and do a bit of shoveling. Today’s item is The Ecology of Work.

CAPT Doug Traversa: I”ll be compiling this post, but four of us will be writing. I”ll try to keep it clear when we switch authors. Last week 1SG Troy Stewart wrote a post called SOME GUYS I WOULD LIKE TO MEET. We are those guys, writers for AWAC — Afghanistan Without a Clue. We will attempt to write a joint post, and with four hours until my…

I could never bring myself to forward all the email jokes, cartoons and other Internet comedy that land in my inbox. But then I started posting the ones my dad sends me. Judging from my comments and emails, my dad has become one of my greatest blogging assets. So for your morning blog chuckle I present: From My Dad.
WHO DOES WHAT
A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each morning.
The wife said, “You should do it because you get up first, and then we don’t have to wait as long to get our coffee.
The husband said, “You are in charge of cooking around here and you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee.”
Wife replies, “No, you should do it, and besides, it is in the Bible that the man should do the coffee.”
Husband replies, “I can’t believe that, show me.”
So she fetched a bible, and opened the Christian Scriptures and showed him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says: Hebrews.

Story values are the universal qualities of human experience that may shift from positive to negative, or negative to positive, from one moment to the next: love/hate, wisdom/stupidity, good/evil and right/wrong.

Every once in a while I Google “Jeff Hess” to see how I’m doing in the standings (still No. 1). This evening something new showed up; the website http://www.jeffhess.de/ This Jeff Hess is a physical comedian who reminds me a little bit of a young Red Skelton. Check out the videos. My favorite so far is Serious Lee.

CAPT Doug Traversa: Jingle trucks are by far the most colorful things in Afghanistan. They are brightly painted, with chimes hanging off the front bumper (thus the name), and many are adorned with colorful tassels. These trucks are everywhere, almost as common as cars. One of my early posts on The Sandbox was about JINGLE TRUCKS, and I am known…

CREATION
A man said to his wife one day, “I don’t know how you can be so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time.”
The wife responded, “Allow me to explain. God made me beautiful so you would be attracted to me; God made me stupid so I would be attracted to you!

I sent a link to my blogsis Shamash to

two photos I took last fall at the nearby Shwedagon Pagoda. Nat statues are in both pictures, and in the one photo, one is behind the Buddha image where water is pored on the buddha and the nat to receive blessing.

@WR: 1. Always have a notepad, pen, watch, knife, and flashlight on hand. In life, as in the Army, there are always unforeseen events. An important note needs to be taken, you need the precise time, something needs to be fixed, or you just can’t find your way. All these items are small and cheap; lifesavers when you have them, deal breakers when you…
