TIME POWER: TODAY…

0001 by Jeff Hess

Today, as I go about my tasks, I’ll think about: In that fifteen to thirty minutes each day, you must face reality. In solitude you must know who you really are. Acknowledge the fact that you have not yet achieved a particular goal or that there is some incongruity between your performance and a particular unifying principle. But do not whip yourself for your failure. Throw no dirty bricks. Simply accept yourself for who you are and recognize your tremendous potential for achievement and change. p. 161

Two days ago a fire engulfed the Yadanabon Market Building in Mandalay. Firefighters needed 13 hours to quench the flames. I very impressed at the coverage that came from bloggers like Birma News, Golden Colour Revolution, Mghla, dawn_1o9’s Xanga, Ya Da Nar Pone Zay and video from Niknayman.

MUCKING OUT THE BLOGPILE…

I’m constantly tossing interesting websites into what I call my blogpile. Some of them find their way here in the form of regular posts, but more often than not they languish and get buried deeper in the pile. The end result is that I have to go back and do a bit of shoveling. Today’s item is Deduct Those Home Office Expenses

WAL-MART WEDNESDAY…

1000 by Jeff Hess

It’s been a busy week in Wally World: the Universe’s source of cheap plastic crap. On The Writing On The Wal — the blog USA Today says should be on its readers’ radar — Jonathan Rees, Robert Feinman, Peter Sayles and I continue our work dedicated to drawing back the curtain on the Bentonvile Behemoth’s corporate disinformation and other flackery.

A WAL-MART BY ANY OTHER NAME… I”m not sure who is fooling whom here. It never mattered if you were driving a Chevy, a Buick, an Oldsmobile or a Cadillac, you knew that you were driving a General Motors product. The name doesn”t matter. And the stock price wouldn”t suffer. Keep reading…

PROFITING FROM OTHERS” SUFFERRING… I”m really getting disgusted by all the Wall Street gnomes doing Snoopy happy dances over Wal-Mart”s bump in sales because people who have been living on the edge in a nose-diving economy are forced to spend the dollars they have left in their pockets at Wal-Mart. Keep reading…

AT THE WALLY PLEX… There are sound stages on Hollywood”s back lots smaller than Bentonvile”s behemoths, so it”s no surprise that budding video talent has been sneaking cameras in at odd hours. And now for the midnight show at the Wally Plex featuring xWALxMARTx. Keep reading…

BOUGHT WITH DESPERATION IN AMERICA… Those who also read my primary blog – Have Coffee Will Write – know that every morning I post a humorous, or thought provoking, bit to start off the day. The vast majority are from my dad, but occasionally other readers contribute. as well. Keep reading…

WORSHIPING AT THE HOUSE OF WAL-MART… As the economy that will be President George Bush”s second legacy – the death toll in Iraq and Afghanistan will be the first – continues south, I was struck by the poignancy of a decision by the city council of Carlinville, Illinois, to not allow a zoning change for an abandoned Wal-Mart. Keep reading…

SOMEBODY IS LYING HERE… It seems to me that I”m seeing more and more financial stories where the reporter has no clue what they are writing about or asking any kind of questions that seek clarification on the fuzzy and obfuscated. The big story this morning about China is a case in point. Keep reading…

CUSTOMER TRAINING IN ELECTRONICS… The function of workers at Wal-Mart is to stock the shelves. There are many who take great pride in what they do, take the time to learn as much as they can about their departments and the products they”re responsible for. Keep reading…

LIVE BY THE SHELF… DIE BY THE SHELF… In agriculture farmers talk about the dangers of monocultures – crops with little or no genetic diversity where a new virus can wipe out 90 percent or more of a crop with no resistance. Cott has learned that a lack of diversity in customers can be just as devistating. Keep reading…

SO WHY IS WAL-MART THRIVIING…? Daniel Gross asks the question this morning on Slate under the headline The Wal-Mart Puzzle. Gross gets it and nails four reasons why Wal-Mart looks so attrative to the Wall Street gnomes and the gamblers who hang on their every word. Keep reading…

GOOD AFTERNOON MYANMAR…

0430 by Jeff Hess

I saw this coming. In a sublimely Orwellian move, the military dictators of Myanmar have made it illegal to not like their faux constitutional process. And as an added deft twist, the generals have disenfranchised all Buddhist monks and nuns, barring them from voting on the worthless piece of paper formerly known as a constitution.

From The Irrawaddy:

The state-controlled press reported that the new legislation, announced on Tuesday evening, provides for penalties of up to three years imprisonment and 100,000 kyat (US $77) for offenders who distribute statements and posters or who make speeches against the referendum.

The law, signed by junta leader Snr-Gen Than Shwe, was printed, in the Burmese language, in Wednesday’s edition of the state-run Myanma Alin newspaper.

The paper said the law’s objectives were to cover such matters as the preparation of electoral rolls, vote counting and postponement and cancellation of voting.

The referendum plan has been faulted by its critics for failing to be “inclusive” of all shades of political opinion. Those excluded from voting include monks, nuns, high-ranking Christian and Hindu officials, the mentally ill, people living in exile, convicted felons and foreigners. Continue Reading »

FROM MY CHAPBOOK…

My name is Jeff Hess and I’m a biblioholic. I own hundreds of books. Not valuable books, mostly Science Fiction paperbacks and text books, tomes rescued by the bag from library book sales. A few years ago, in the interest of not burying myself, I began reading more books from the library and taking notes. My electronic chapbook was born.

This is a passage I copied from Midrash and Literature edited by Geoffrey H. Hartman and Sanford Budick.

GOOD MORNING MYANMAR…

2030 by Jeff Hess

China appears to have a large reality disconnect when it comes to its actions as a nation and its plan to reap tremendous public relation points from the 2008 Summer Olympics. Attempts to connect the two politicize the Olympics are olitical maneuvering. Imagine that. Political maneuvering at the Olympics.

The leaders of China need to get out more.

From The Guardian:

China repeated its stand on Tuesday that this year’s Beijing Olympics should not be subject to political meddling in response to a boycott call by a Myanmar opposition group.

The 88 Generation Students organisation urged the boycott in protest against what it called China’s “bankrolling” of the Myanmar military government that crushed pro-democracy protests last year.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told a news conference the Aug. 8-24 Games were a big event for China and the world.

“It should not be politicized,” he said. “Political excuses should not be used to meddle in it.”

Meddling. Imagine that.

But is Liu Jianchao right?

In the interest of setting an example I’ve decided to link to those blog posts that have compelled me to leave a comment.

GOOD AFTERNOON MYANMAR…

0430 by Jeff Hess

This doesn’t look good. It was bad enough when the military dictators of Myanmar announced that Aung San Suu Kyi would be excluded from elections because she had committed the crime of marrying a foreigner, but now it looks like the generals may release further restrictions on what they laughingly call their road map to democracy.

From The Australian:

Burma’s military rulers say they have set up a 45-member commission to oversee a constitutional referendum slated for May, but have given no precise date for the balloting.

State television said a law to govern the referendum had been enacted, but said details on its provision would be released tomorrow.

The new commission will be headed by Supreme Court chief justice Aung Toe, who also led up the panel tasked with writing the final version of the proposed charter.

That panel wrapped up its work one week ago, but the document still has not been released.

I expect a masterpiece of bureaucratic double-speak and obfuscation.

Don’t you?
