I could never bring myself to forward all the email jokes, cartoons and other Internet comedy that land in my inbox. But then I started posting the ones my dad sends me. Judging from my comments and emails, my dad has become one of my greatest blogging assets. So for your morning blog chuckle I present: From My Dad.

GOOD MORNING MYANMAR…

2130 by Jeff Hess

I’ve probably write about the link between building community and coversation a few thousand times. That relationship is one of the few idea that I really hold to be true. I’ve been the target of censorship by the generals myself, but nothing compared to what has happened in recent weeks.

From The Irrawaddy:

In recent days, the Burmese military junta has imposed harsh sentences, including the death penalty, on five citizens accused of leaking information, demonstrating once again that it doesn’t tolerate the free flow of information.

For leaking information about military ties between Burma and North Korea, a special court held in Rangoon”s notorious Insein Prison sentenced ex-Maj Win Naing Kyaw and his associate, Thura Kyaw, to death.

Pyan Sein, another aide to Win Naing Kyaw-who is the former personal assistant of late Secretary 2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo-received a 15-year prison sentence. Both Thura Kyaw and Pyan Sein worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A few days before these sentences were handed down, two very different figures received severe sentences for sharing sensitive information with the outside world.

On Dec. 31, video journalist Hla Hla Win and her assistant Myint Naing were sentenced to 26 years in prison for attempting to smuggle video footage about the country to the Norway-based Democratic Voice of Burma.

According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners-Burma, a Burmese human rights group based in Thailand, more than 40 people are currently in jail for their work in media.

Just consider for a moment what a big deal it is when a single American journalist is jailed.

BILL MASON’S IMPAIRED JUDGMENT…

1604 by Jeff Hess

[Update @ 1604: James Renner calls it: Mason will be history in two weeks.]

Tim Russo at Plunderbund called bullshit on this story days ago.

Last evening Faux News TV station channel eight snapped awake nine days after the fact and ran with the story, which includes video of the drunk driving stop.

Blogger and newly sworn-in Pepper Pike councilmember Jill Miller Zimon writes this morning and ask the question that ought to be on every Cuyahoga County voter’s mind:

Specifically, how will the PD editorial board tell us to interpret the observation that our county prosecutor, who occupies an elected seat that remains an elected seat in the new structure, got into a car being driven by someone he, the top law enforcement person in our county, deemed unimpaired, while the police in the prosecutor”s hometown found that driver to be anything but unimpaired? And think about it – Regas lives in Parma, yes? So he was driving like he was, less than two blocks from Mason”s house, and Mason would have been okay with Regas driving like that home to Parma? Is that right?

How badly does Bill Mason want to smack himself up-side the head right now?

GOOD MORNING MYANMAR…

2130 by Jeff Hess

I linked yesterday at the end of my railroad post to the story about the men Myanmar intends to execute for leaking what it considers to be sensitive national information. In the previous stories I missed a minor detail that the London Times puts in the second paragraph of its story.

The three men, one of them a major in the Burmese army, were also convicted of distributing photographs of a secret network of military tunnels which, together with the evidence of high-level contacts with North Korea, raised suspicions that Burma might be developing its own nuclear weapons. [The emphasis is mine, JH]

Tunnels with links to North Korea’s nuclear weapons program is very different news than reporting, as the stories yesterday emphasized, that General Thura Shwe Mann had secretly visited North Korea.

I think this clearly demonstrates that the Myanmar has learned from North Korea that the best way to prevent an invasion by the United States is to get your hands on a nuclear weapon as quickly as possible. That the decision to execute two of the three men involved has been made so public only reinforces this assumption on my part.

This is not comforting development.

HEY GEORGIE… WAKE THE FECK UP…!

0845 by Jeff Hess

Wonks, wanks and winks are buzzing over New York City’s 9/11 mayor Rudy Giuliani’s gaff yesterday on Good Morning America where he joined fellow Republicans Dana Perino and Mary Matalin in seeming to forget that the September 11th attacks happened under President Bush, wrote The Huffington Post.

I don’t care what Giuliani, Perino or Matalin said. They’re Republicans. You can tell when a Republican is lying because their lips move. Move on.

George Stephanopoulos, however, gets no pass from me. The quote comes at 3:20 in the video and at 3:32 Stephanopoulos begins to talk over Giuliani and at 3:35 the camera switches to Stephanopoulos. There is absolutely no indication that Stephanopoulos even heard the gaff. Was he even listening to Giuliani or was he too busy thinking of his next question?

Later, when he has had time to consider what he did, Stephanopoulos doesnt’ even attempt to explain how he let that one by.

As far as I’m concerned, Stephanopoulos is clearly not a journalist, but rather an over-paid entertainer in the same league as Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Anne Coulter.

Feh!

GOOD MORNING MYANMAR…

2130 by Jeff Hess

My dad is a railroad hobbyist. Every summer vacation we visited relatives, we toured historic sites, we rode trains. Fast forward 10 years. I’m on liberty in Pusan, Korea, where real steam engines still haul freight. I decided to take a picture for my dad and nearly got my head blown off by a very upset ROK soldier with an M-16. I survived.

I probably wouldn’t be so lucky in Myanmar.

From Mizzima:

As of this month all films and videos shot at locations related to the Burmese Railways has to be submitted to the Myanmar Rail Film and Video Shooting Scrutiny Board, a senior Rail Ministry official said.

The order tantamounts to production of all films, videos and song VCDs going through two separate censor boards in both the pre-production and post-production stages.

“If the location for the shooting for films and videos is at places related to the railways, the producers must first seek permission from the ministry. After which they have to submit their film and video to the Rail Censor Board,” the officer who did not want to be named told Mizzima.

In the normal course censorship of films and videos is conducted by the Myanmar Film and Video Censor Board.

The new regulation makes it mandatory for the film and video which has already passed through the Rail Censor Board to be submitted again to the Myanmar Film and Video Censor Board for final approval.

I wonder why the generals are getting so touchy about videos of trains?
