$150,000 each and they don’t work. Why am I not surprised?

This is why it is important to take science classes in school people.

ONE BED, TWO BEDS, FREE BEDS, SNORE…

1005 by Jeff Hess

From the BBC:

Dr Neil Stanley, a sleep expert at the University of Surrey, said: “It’s not surprising that people are disturbed by sleeping together.

“Historically, we have never been meant to sleep in the same bed as each other. It is a bizarre thing to do.

“Sleep is the most selfish thing you can do and it’s vital for good physical and mental health.

“Sharing the bed space with someone who is making noises and who you have to fight with for the duvet is not sensible.

“If you are happy sleeping together that’s great, but if not there is no shame in separate beds.”

He said there was a suggestion that women are pre-programmed to cope better with broken sleep.

“A lot of life events that women have disturb sleep – bringing up children, the menopause and even the menstrual cycle,” he explained.

But Dr Stanley added people did get used to sharing a bed.

“If they have shared their bed with their partner for a long time they miss them and that will disturb sleep.”

Damn evolution and our regretable need for a good night’s sleep.

Judging from my comments and emails, my dad has become one of my greatest blogging assets. So for your morning blog chuckle I present: From My Dad.

GOOD MORNING MYANMAR…

2130 by Jeff Hess

Defense and prosecuting attorneys in the case of Nyi Nyi Aung v. The Military Dictators of Myanmar delivered their final arguments today and the court is expected to deliver a verdict within a week according to The Associated Press. Beth Schwanke, Legislative Counsel, Freedom Now, offers this analysis.

Nyi Nyi’s detention and trial are gravely flawed under both Burmese and international law and he has suffered severe mistreatment by Burmese officials. He was denied food and sleep for a week, beaten, and denied medical treatment. This is a violation of the jus cogens prohibition against torture. Nyi Nyi was denied consular access for two periods of over two weeks. This is a clear violation of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. Further, Nyi Nyi has been denied regular access to counsel and an open trial in violation of Burma’s Code of Criminal Procedure and Judiciary Law.

One aspect that gravely bothers me about Nyi Nyi’s incarceration and torture is that our own record in the United States over the eight years under President George Bush has sucked much of our international credibility on such human rights stances into the void.

From Jobs With Justice:

Stop Hugo Boss from Eliminating 400 Jobs

Workers United members are fighting Hugo Boss’s decision to close its factory in Cleveland and eliminate 400 good-paying union jobs. The company claims it can no longer afford to keep the plant open- but their own quarterly reports show that Hugo Boss made more than $140 million in profits in the first nine months of 2009 alone.

The workers in Cleveland will continue to fight for their jobs and are organizing events to draw attention to Hugo Boss’ shameful behavior. Email Hugo Boss Chief Operating Officer Dr. Andreas Stockert (Andreas_Stockert@HugoBoss.com) and tell him to keep the plant open. Watch a video of Hugo Boss workers. Please take action now!! We need to prevent Hugo Boss from leaving Cleveland. The workers are counting you!

CITIZENS UNITED V. FEDERAL ELECTION COM. …

1107 by Jeff Hess

I agree with the majority decision yesterday by the United States Supreme Court in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. My reason is simple: I really, really, really believe in the power of the First Amendment to our Constitution.

Censorship is the greatest threat to any free society.

The correct response to objectionable speech is never to gag opposition. A free society demands that its citizens rise to that which they object and respond with vigor and reason in kind.

There are correct responses to organizational funding of electronic media (what we’re really talking about here). Foremost ought to be an immediate reinstitution of the Fairness Doctrine and the Equal Time Rule for all, and I do mean all, not just network broadcasts, electronic media.

ROLDO RIGHTS…

Roldo Bartimole writes:

My best laugh on a trip out West for warm air came when I read on line Sam Miller”s tribute to himself as part of Cleveland Magazine”s take on Cleveland”s most powerful people.

Sam”s powerfully funny. He may have lost a few steps at 88 years old but he”s still got the great one-liners. Possibly to some he”s even believable.

The man”s a genius of humbuggery. A combination of 2 percent Will Rogers and 98 percent P. T. Barnum. Maybe a touch of Henny Youngman. (The doctor says, “You”ll live to be 60!” “I AM 60! “See, what did I tell you.”)

What I can”t understand is why Cleveland Magazine doesn”t do the top charlatans Continue Reading »
