FROM MY DAD…
0630 by Jeff Hess
I could never bring myself to forward all the email jokes, cartoons and other Internet comedy that land in my inbox. But then I started posting the ones my dad sends me. Judging from my comments and emails, my dad has become one of my greatest blogging assets. So for your morning blog video excursion I present: From My Dad.

GOOD MORNING MYANMAR…
2130 by Jeff Hess
Aung San Suu Kyi is only one of thousands of women in Myanmar who oppose the State Peace and Development Council (aka Myanmar’s military dictators) every day. Hundreds have suffered beatings and at present, some 190 are among Myanmar’s 2,200 political prisoners. Their numbers, in and out of prison, continue to grow.
From IPS:
Mid-February saw the latest group of female political activists thrown into jail with a two-year prison term, including hard labour, for a “crime” they committed four months ago – donating religious literature to a Buddhist monastery, an act that the junta deemed as “disturbing the peace.”
At the time of their arrest in October 2009, Naw Ohn Hla, Myint Myint San, Cho Cho Lwin and Cho Cho Aye had also been conducting regular prayers at the landmark Shwedagon pagoda in Rangoon, the country”s former capital, to secure the release of opposition leader Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest for over 14 of the last 20 years.
“These women were very persistent with their religious activity no matter the risks they faced, any oppression,” says Khin Ohmar, vice chairwoman of the Burmese Women”s Union, a network of democracy activists exiled in Thailand. “It is a sign of their determination and political beliefs.”
“Jailing female political activists is not going to silence them,” she revealed in a telephone interview from Mae Sot, a town along the Thai-Burmese border. “The military authorities keep repeatedly making this mistake.”
In the months ahead, as the people of Myanmar move closer to the promised Fall elections, Amnesty International expects the number of women protesting and being imprisoned to climb.
How full can Myanmar’s prisons become?

ROLDO RIGHTS…
1346 by Jeff HessThe Cleveland Corporate Corrupters had a big meeting yesterday. They”re already deciding how to spend tens of millions of dollars we don”t have.
It”s an act of piracy seldom defined by the mass media. The media simply play it as “that”s the way things are done” apparently.
No other voices need be raised. The PD, our major source of information, doesn”t have the imagination to even prompt dissent or an alternative view. It”s not in the mass media”s DNA.
One of the greatest needs in Cleveland is a new Public Square, according to these masters of the county”s universe. These people Continue Reading »

FROM MY CHAPBOOK…

The trick of starting in the middle, however, is extremely useful in fiction. By beginning at a point where events are already in motion, you involve your readers in the flow of action and get him caught up in your fiction right away. They you can back off and let him know what it is he”d gone and gotten himself interested in. p. 147

Occasionally I step back and read what others not getting paid to write about Myanmar say. Today I found American University Student Campaign for Burma, based in Washington, D.C.. Written primarily by Anne K Lynch, the weekly blog, like Have Coffee Will Write, is an aggregate on news coming from, and about, Myanmar.
This week Lynch expressed her frustration with Myanmar’s continuing litany of excuses by going all Rhett on their asses with Frankly, Burma, I don’t give a damn!

COULD’VE BEEN THAT X FILES FLYING SAUCER…
0753 by Jeff HessFrom the BBC:
A large space rock may have exploded over Antarctica thousands of years ago, showering a large area with debris, according to new research.
The evidence comes from accumulations of tiny meteoritic particles and a layer of extraterrestrial dust found in Antarctic ice cores.
Details of the work were presented at a major science conference in Texas.
The event would have been similar to the Tunguska event, which flattened a large area of Siberian forest in 1908.

When I teach magazine article writing, I always say, “Start in the middle and end at the beginning.” It”s rigid, it”s handcuffs; it also works. Start full steam with a topic, get the reader involved and interested; then back track, fill in, move through the research, the topic, build, build, build… then, when you get to the end, look back at what you suggested in the beginning and round it out. p. 147

GOOD MORNING MYANMAR…
2130 by Jeff Hess
Burma VJ Director Anders Ostergaard was on NPR’s Talk Of The Nation this afternoon. I’m fascinated by the rise of the documentary in Oscar season. When movie goers begin to take a real interest in the real world that is good for all of us. As political as it may seem, Inglorious Bastards is still entertainment.
From ‘Burma VJ’: Documenting The Saffron Revolution:
An anonymous group risked imprisonment and possible torture to smuggle footage out of Myanmar for the world to see.
Director Anders Ostergaard pieced the footage together to create his Oscar-nominated documentary, Burma VJ.
“It took a little while to figure out how to make a film in Burma,” Ostergaard tells host Neal Conan. “And then we realized,” Ostergaard continues, “there was this phenomenon of citizen journalists, which were all organized by a satellite station based in Oslo, Norway, which is next to where I live in Denmark.”
Ostergaard met up with several of the journalists in Bangkok, where they gathered for security training. There, he met Joshua, who became the central character in Burma VJ.
You can listen to the full 17 minute and 14 second broadcast at the Talk Of The Nation website.

THANK GOODNESS FOR HIS FACEBOOK FRIENDS…
1805 by Jeff HessFrom Haaretz:
The Israel Defense Forces called off a raid in Palestinian territory after a soldier posted details, including the time and place, on the social networking website Facebook, Army Radio reported on Wednesday.
The soldier – since relieved of combat duty – described in a status update how his unit planned a “clean-up” arrest raid in a West Bank area, Army Radio said.
“On Wednesday we clean up Qatanah, and on Thursday, god willing, we come home,” the soldier wrote on his Facebook page, refering to a West Bank village near Ramallah.
The soldier also disclosed the name of the combat unit, the place of the operation and the time it will take place. Facebook friends then reported him to military authorities.
Surely the Palestinians don’t use Facebook, right?

Shalom Alex,I take offense at the implication that any one, like myself, who thinks the students are on the wrong path, is somehow on par with the kkk.
I detail my thinking on Have Coffee Will Write.
B’shalom,
Jeff
Since this was my second attempt at posting, I can’t say I’m surprised.
Needless to say I’ve removed Change.org from my blog reading cycle and unsubscribed from its email updates.
