GOOD MORNING MYANMAR…

While I’m in the mountains of North Carolina, I’ve gone back to take a look at some of the websites dealing with Myanmar that you may not be familiar with. This morning I offer a story from the Burmese Events in the UK on: Invitation for Fundraising Event by Karen Community Association…

We the Karen Community Association would like to invite you all to a fund-raising event on 20th March 2010.

We the KCA-UK members are very concerned about our people. We also recently received the news about increased attacks taking place in Eastern Burma Karen State. Over 70 houses and two schools have been burnt down and thousands of civilians displaced.

Because we understand these situations first hand, we would like to help the Karen people of Burma by holding a fundraising event. From the funds we raise, 80% will go straight to helping the displaced inside Burma and 20% will help to fund our KCA activities.

The event programme will include a welcome from our community leader as well as other speakers including the Burma Campaign UK member and performances from our youth and children. Then a very delicious Karen and Burmese food buffet will be available (vegetarians and Halal food will be served).

Kara Walton, of Claymont, Delaware sued the owner of a night club in a nearby city because she fell from the bathroom window to the floor, knocking out her two front teeth. Even though Ms. Walton was trying to sneak through the ladies room window to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge, the jury said the night club had to pay her $12,000, plus dental expenses.

While the above contains a grain of truth, the bull shit level is so high that it amost deserves teabagger status

This morning I offer a story from the Burma Rivers Network on: Open Letter Requstion China To Halt Destruction Of Villags Opposed To China’ Myitsone Dam I Burma…

On behalf of the communities suffering from the Myitsone Dam project in Kachin State, we appeal to you to immediately halt the forced relocation and destruction of the villages of those opposed to this project by China’s state-owned China Power Investment Corporation. The construction of this dam is against the will of local people and violates China’s own dam construction guidelines as well as international standards.

Recently Burma’s military government has ordered over 1,000 civilians from our capital Myitkyina to forcibly relocate all the residents of Tanghpre, the main village at the dam site, before the end of May 2010. If villagers refuse to leave, these civilians have been ordered to immediately tear down Tanghpre’s houses, schools and churches.

Amber Carson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, recieved $113,000 from a Philadelphia restaurant after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her tailbone. The reason the soft drink was on the floor: Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument.

While I’m in the mountains of North Carolina on my annual writer’s retreat, I’ve gone back to take a look at some of the websites dealing with Myanmar that you may not be familiar with. This morning I offer a story from the Burma Democratic Concern on: Burma Democratic Concern: UNHCR must avoid discrimination…

Burma Democratic Concern today calls for UNHCR (Malaysia) to respect human rights and to avoid discrimination dealing with Burmese refugees from Burma.

Burma is make up with Burmese (Bamar), Kachin, Kayar, Karean, Chin, Mon, Arakan and Shan. Burmese refugees fled from Burma due to military regime’s extreme repression. People of Burma voted for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as their leader and they don’t agree with junta illegitimate rule in Burma. Military regime sees no difference in oppressing people of Burma and always uses ultimate force to crush all the opposition regardless of religion, race or ethnicity. There are more than 70, 000 Burmese refugees in Malaysia according to the official figures. Since Malaysia is not party to the 1951 Refugee Convention or its Protocol, refugees are vulnerable to detention and deportation.

While we applaud the UNHCR tireless efforts helping refugees but we also have reports that UNHCR office in Malaysia is not fair in dealing with Burmese refugees issues. Addition, some of the officers at the UNHCR (Malaysia) office is creating climate of discrimination with regard to dealing with Burmese refugees.

Jerry Williams, of Little Rock, Arkansas, was awarded $14,500 plus medical expenses after being bitten on the butt by his next door neighbor’s beagle – even though the beagle was on a chain in its owner’s fenced yard. Williams did not get as much as he asked for because the jury believed the beagle might have been provoked at the time of the butt bite because Williams had climbed over the fence into the yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun.

Terrence Dickson, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, was leaving a house he had just burglarized by way of the garage. Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldn’t re-enter the house because the door connecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight, count ’em, EIGHT days and survive on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dry dog food, he sued the homeowner’s insurance company claiming undue mental anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay Dickson $500,000 for his anguish.

Everyone knows that Spalding wrote in English, but few people are aware that he meditated in three languages. He was fluent in the languages of Chance, Fate and Necessity. He knew how to read their signs, which led him to conclude that things do not happen for a reason. They just happen. On the surface it was a liberating insight, but the thought was disturbing to him in its implication that perhaps the moment is all there is, with no immortal afterlife or sequel to follow.
