I turn 59 next month. My dad emailed me a series of photos and captions purported to be from 1955. I haven’t verified any of the quotes, but they’re fun nonetheless.

I’ll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are,
it’s going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $10.00.
From my dad, of course…

I called this back on 21 June. Want to know how Marietta and Washington County are going to spend all of that cash rolling in from fracking? How about a bigger jail, more police and sheriffs to handle rising crime and increased social services loads. A gun-shot wound treatment refresher course for local hospitals will probably also be a good idea.
Stop and think for a moment. In the lede to her top-of-the-fold, front page story Human trafficking ring busted, Jasmine Rogers writes:
A man and woman accused of running a forced prostitution ring in the area for more than a week were arrested Thursday in Marietta. The arrests mark what is possibly the first human trafficking case ever seen in Washington County [Emphasis mine, JH], according to investigators.
Set aside the inaccuracy of the claim—just stop in at The Levee House and ask about the history in that building—and contemplate these questions: first, who were the the customers? second, who else was staying in that hotel in the 700 block of Pike Street? (Why did the Times not name the hotel? The Quality Inn is at 700 Pike and the Holiday Inn is at 701 Pike); third, how did the Xavier Freeman get the word out to these customers and fourth, why were the customers in Marietta? If the recent influx of out-of-state oil industry workers flocking to make fracking bucks popped into your head, well give yourself a prize.
Cue Robert Preston…
