MUCKING OUT THE BLOGPILE…

1430 by Jeff Hess

I’m constantly tossing interesting websites into what I call my blogpile. Some of them find their way here in the form of regular posts, but more often than not they languish and get buried deeper in the pile. The end result is that I have to go back and do a bit of shoveling. Today’s item is Shooing Your Work Demons: Time-Wasting Activities.

I NEVER INTENDED TO OFFEND ANYONE…

0914 by Jeff Hess

I know what Johnson County, Indiana, election clerk Jill Jackson meant when she told a reporter for the Associated Press that she never intended to offend anyone by placing fliers on the desks of her fellow workers that referred to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a young black Adolf Hitler.

Jackson assumed that her peers in the county’s election office would share her racist world view and get a joke out of such a reference to Senator Obama.

But then she got busted.

A Republican county election clerk said Friday she has apologized to two employees for distributing copies of Internet blog posting referring to Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama as a “young, black Adolf Hitler.”

The employees, who had voted for Obama in Indiana’s Democratic primary, discovered the printouts at their desks after returning from Labor Day weekend, sheriff’s Deputy Doug Cox said in a police report made public this week. One of the workers complained, and surveillance video showed Johnson County Clerk Jill Jackson placing an item on one worker’s desk at 5:27 p.m. on the Friday of Labor Day weekend, Cox said.

This is all the more unsettling because Jackson is not just an average racist. She’s a racist who works in a county’s election office.

And I’m not reassured by this statement:

Doug Lechner, Republican Party chairman in the county just south of Indianapolis, said the incident was unacceptable and taints Jackson’s ability to appear unbiased in administering this year’s election. County clerks are elected officials responsible for training poll workers, providing all voters an opportunity to cast their ballot without influence, and overseeing vote counts.

“She’s in a sensitive position and she has to give all the appearance of fairness,” Lechner said.

Appearance of fairness, Doug? Doesn’t substance count?

The idea that we all have to go along to get along is wrong. It’s what encourages bigots and racists and bullies to believe that people actually think that what they do is not only acceptable, but pretty cool too.

Only zero tolerance convinces these cowards that their hatred and prejudice is not acceptable.

SO HOW DID HE KNOW…?

1855 by Jeff Hess

The Ashley Todd story is out of control.

From Talking Points Memo:

The McCain spokesperson’s claims — which came in the midst of extraordinary and heated conversations late yesterday between the McCain campaign, local TV stations, and the Obama camp, as the early version of the story rocketed around the political world — is significant because it reveals a McCain official pushing a version of the story that was far more explosive than the available or confirmed facts permitted at the time. [My emphasis, JH.]

The claims to KDKA from the McCain campaign were included in an early story that ran late yesterday on KDKA’s Web site. The paragraphs containing these assertions were quickly removed from the story after the Obama campaign privately complained that KDKA was letting the McCain campaign spin a racially-charged version of the story before the facts had been established, according to two sources familiar with the discussions.

The story with the removed grafs is still right here. We preserved the three missing grafs from yesterday:

If John McCain discovers that communications director Peter Feldman had any role in this he shouldn’t fire Feldman. He should withdraw from the race.

It’s what an honorable man would do.

REPUBLICANS REDUCED TO GNAWING ON SKULLS…

1426 by Jeff Hess

What has the scortched earth policy of John McCain and Sarah Palin wrought? Not satisfied with their own horrible defeat, they have thrown the geneation that will follow them into Chaos.

I do hope that this young woman gets help and is able to recover from the damage done to her and her peers by a leadership without compassion, conservative or otherwise.

And then there’s Tim:

Now, John McCain will forever be tied to the hate and bigotry his campaign has quite purposely and calculatedly unleashed. That”s a real shame, because once, John McCain was a great American. But great Americans do not enable the likes of Ashley Todd. They do not create an environment in which someone thinks it perfectly reasonable to have someone punch them in their own face, and carve backwards letters into their own cheek, and then blame a big ugly Negro for it.

Someday, John McCain will be alone with his conscience, and he will be forced to come to terms with what he has wrought. I”m quite certain that won”t happen soon. But if John McCain has a soul, he will understand his role in the mere existence of Ashley Todd”s hoax. It is John McCain”s creation, his campaign”s only reason for being anymore.

John isn”t Joe. He created Joe. As surely as he created Ashley Todd.

“Challenge to a Cynic”

You are a cynic.
Because show me where
I have ever said
That there’s absolute proof
That nothing that man
Has ever conducted
Or engaged in,
Has had any effect,
Or no effect,
On climate change.

THE HIGHEST PAID McCAIN STAFFER IS…

1051 by Jeff Hess

Amy Strozzi, Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s make-up artist.

Ms. Strozzi, who was nominated for an Emmy award for her makeup work on the television show “So You Think You Can Dance?”, was paid $22,800 for the first two weeks of October alone, according to the records. The campaign categorized Ms. Strozzi”s payment as “PERSONNEL SVC/EQUIPMENT.”

The payment on Oct. 10 made Ms. Strozzi the single highest-paid individual in the campaign for that two-week period. (There were more than two dozen companies that got larger payments than Ms. Strozzi). She easily beat out Mr. Scheunemann, who received $12,500 in the first half of October, and Ms. Wallace, who got $12,000.

Don’t all hockey moms have make-up artists?

TAKE YOUR DATE FOR COFFEE… NOT DRINKS…

0934 by Jeff Hess

From the Who Thinks Of These Studies? department:

People are more likely to judge strangers as welcoming and trustworthy when they are holding a hot cup of coffee, experiments show.

Volunteers rated people as 11% “warmer” after holding a hot drink than after holding a cold drink, the study in Science reports.

Do romances that start in coffee houses last longer than those that start in bars?
