AH, THOSE REPUBLICAN FAMILY VALUES…
0918 by Jeff HessI suspect, though I’m not sure, that this behavior may have some impact on my status as a positive male role model in his life (This is to say nothing of his mother yelling “I can’t believe you slept with that nasty whore!” in the background.) I think that Samori may have some questions for me, if not now, then perhaps when he’s 18. I think I’ve found a most agreeable soloution. I’ll simply peer deep into his eyes, with the smuggest, most self-regarding look I can muster, and say, “Son, some thing in life must be mysterious.”

ANDREW SULLIVAN STUFFS THE NUTSHELL…
0843 by Jeff HessLinking to Kevin Drum, Sullivan writes:
[W]hen the Republicans impeached a president for committing perjury in a civil suit, it was about the rule of law. But when it comes to holding a president accountable for war crimes in his public capacity, it is about criminalizing political differences. Do these people even hear themselves?
No, Andrew, they don’t.

WHAT THAT $.0025 IS ADDING UP TO…
0828 by Jeff HessI’m really beginning to think that if Roldo Bartimole’s political eye could somehow be hooked up with a 21st century Thomas Nast we could whip the scoundrels through the streets of Cleveland and send them and their political sycophants packing.

HOW THE RELIGIOUS WRONG WORKS…
0741 by Jeff HessFrom Aware:
On March 28, AWARE was taken over by a group of newcomers who had only recently joined the organisation. 102 people turned up for AWARE’s annual general meeting, which had been relatively less well-attended in the past. 80 of these attendants had only recently joined AWARE between January and March 2009.
When the election of office bearers began, almost every position was challenged by a member of this group. 9 out of 12 of the executive committee memberships went to newcomers, who were voted in by wide majorities.
Claire Nazar nominated by out-going President, Constance Singam, was the only one voted in unopposed. She resigned the Presidency 11 days into office. Josie Lau was subsequently appointed by the new Exco to take her place.

WALMART WEDNESDAY…
1030 by Jeff Hess
It’s been a busy week in Wally World: the Universe’s source of cheap plastic crap. On The Writing On The Wal — the blog USA Today says should be on its readers’ radar — Jonathan Rees, Robert Feinman and I continue our work dedicated to drawing back the curtain on the Bentonvile Behemoth’s corporate disinformation and other flackery.
WALMART HANDS OUT PINKO SLIPS IN CHINA… The great unknown in the global economic plummet is China. What will China do with our government bonds, what will Chinese workers do as America stops buying and how will we live without cheap plastic crap are all on the minds of Americans. Keep reading…
BUY CHEAP PLASTIC CRAP… KILL THE PLANET… Spending money to save the planet only makes sense if you”re buying something to a.) replace a product that wastes energy, or b.) you”re replacing a no-longer usuable item with an item that places less of a strain on the planet. Keep reading…
SO, WALMARTEES… WAS HE WORTH IT…? How does it feel to make $29.7 million in a single year and know that you came in second place to your competitor who earned $36.4 million? Does $6.7 million really make any difference when you”re living in this rarefied atmosphere? Keep reading…

THE WAIL WHINE OF THE 1 PERCENT…
0816 by Jeff Hess
“No offense to Middle America, but if someone went to Columbia or Wharton, [even if] their company is a fumbling, mismanaged bank, why should they all of a sudden be paid the same as the guy down the block who delivers restaurant supplies for Sysco out of a huge, shiny truck?” e-mails an irate Citigroup executive to a colleague.
“I”m not giving to charity this year!” one hedge-fund analyst shouts into the phone, when I ask about Obama”s planned tax increases. “When people ask me for money, I tell them, ‘If you want me to give you money, send a letter to my senator asking for my taxes to be lowered.” I feel so much less generous right now. If I have to adopt twenty poor families, I want a thank-you note and an update on their lives. At least Sally Struthers gives you an update.”
Oh, boo feckin’ hoo.
This reminds me of the whiner who started a blog after she lost her loot in the Bernie Madoff scam and stopped after two posts because no one had any sympathy for her.

OUT WEIGHING THE PLANET…
1000 by Jeff HessThe rising numbers of people who are overweight and obese in the UK means the nation uses 19% more food than 40 years ago, a study suggests.
That could equate to an extra 60 mega-tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year, the team calculated.
Transport costs of a fatter population were also included in the International Journal of Epidemiology study.
Dr Phil Edwards, study leader and researcher at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said they had set out to calculate what the UK energy consumption would be if the weight of the population was put back a few decades.
A “normal” adult population, where only 3.5% are classed as obese, was compared with a population where 40% are obese.

BUT WHO GETS THE KEYS…?
0854 by Jeff Hess
My invite came in this morning’s mail. A bit of advance planning would have been nice.
Norm Roulet writes in his email:
Information technology pioneer and visionary – and Oberlin graduate – Marc Canter helped me launch REALNEO.US, in 2004… from San Francisco. Now, five years of social community and technology building and innovation later, I’ve convinced Marc to personally return to Northeast Ohio to collaborate with government, citizens and organizations in the community to make the open web a core economic and social strength of our region, at the global level.
We propose that this region focusing on developing social computing related excellence will generate 1,000s of jobs and $ billions in economic benefit here, in just a few years. And we have a plan for how to initiate that, which we will present to the leadership of Cuyahoga County on April 27, 2009. We call this the Citizen Dashboard Proposal.
Tonight, 6 p.m. @ The Euclid Tavern, 11625 Euclid Avenue.

DROPPING THROWING SHOES IN CLEVELAND…
0735 by Jeff Hess
“I would suggest to you that the Mall C site is by far the superior site for several reasons,” writes Jeff Jacobs in an ad today. He didn”t add, “And my dad owns the hotel and parking garage across the street!”
Two developers – Ratners & Jacobs – have been playing this game for at least 20 years.
Both seek public subsidy for their private businesses.
They have been ruining the public life of this city and county for their own selfish interests.

BUT IT’S NOT NEARLY AS CUDDLY…
0803 by Jeff Hess[N]ot everybody has time to lounge about with the 2,000-word masterpiece that you and your editor handcrafted. They want to get to the salient point, and they want to get there now. As heretical as it may sound, the Huffington Post is adding value by skinning alive that beautiful baby seal you just birthed and serving its fresh, beating heart to readers in a hurry.

WHAT THEY SAY…
0805 by Jeff HessI think this is wrong. More than that I think it’s dismissive, silly and bordering on insult to any literate human being. In point of fact “spending our time and energy laying blame for the past” is exactly what the justice system does. By Obama’s logic murderers would go free in the streets. The real question is not whether you’re going to lay blame for the past, but who your going to lay it on, and for which past. What Obama is really saying in this statement is he won’t hold this particular group accountable, for this particular past.
So now, all of a sudden, I was just following orders is an acceptable defense?

The Day of Silence was yesterday, does anyone have first hand knowledge of schools or classrooms that took part?
