A SO-CALLED EXORCISM…?

0855 by Jeff Hess

belpre exorcism 140510

WTAP newsperson Ashley Strum’s It’s so crazy, delivered with a straight face, should go viral on You Tube, or at least be immortalized in a GIF.

So, under the Marietta Times headline: Two Arrested Over Drugs, Exorcism, we read:

Two Belpre men are accused of repeatedly drugging a relative and performing a so-called exorcism on her, as well as animal cruelty.

Forget for a moment the problem of how did they perform animal cruelty on the relative, the use of the modifier so-called for exorcism implies that there is some ritual more legitimate than that chosen by Bobby and Tommy that isn’t a so-called exorcism.

Whatever craziness these two wastes of human genome might have concocted, their actions are no more crazy than anyone believing that they can exorcise non-existent demons (and by that I do not mean that the person targeted by the barbaric practice was not possessed by a demon, but rather that demons, along with the tooth Fairy, Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny, do not exist) is willfully ignorant and a danger to society. Full stop.

Any exorcism, performed by any individual, sanctioned by their personal delusional organization or not, is barbarism fostered by superstition and ignorance.

(I wonder if ending this particular bit of stupid appears on Pope Francis’s to-do list?

PENSÉE NO. 2…

1600 by Jeff Hess

From Chronicle

An evening of crimson and long fever where lances incline and lengthen, we have seen the sky to Westward redder and deeper rose, the rose of sea-larvae from the salt marshes: evening of vast Saharan space, and ever-widening sky, where the first lapses of the light seemed to us like failures of language.

What, if any, thoughts does this pensée raise in your mind?

THE BUSH-OBAMA SECURITY SCHEME IS VERY REAL…

1026 by Jeff Hess

This morning in The//Intercept, Glenn Greenwald dissects an interview of former National Security Agency head Keith Alexander by Christopher Joye writing for Australia’s Financial Review Of course the entire 1,7000-word transcript is fascinating, but Greenwald pulls few quotes out that immediately caught his eye.

The mention of the opposite sides of the same coin observation of presidents Bush and Obama captured my attention because of my repetition of my acronym BOSS, for the Bush-Obama Security Scheme.

Greenwald writes:

The almost-complete continuity between George W. Bush and Barack Obama on such matters has been explained by far too many senior officials in both parties, and has been amply documented in far too many venues, to make it newsworthy when it happens again. Still, the fact that one of the nation’s most powerful generals in history, who has no incentive to say it unless it were true, just comes right out and states that Bush and The Candidate of Change are “very close to the same point” and “you would get almost the same decision from both of them on key questions” is a fine commentary on a number of things, including how adept the 2008 Obama team was at the art of branding.

The fact that Obama, in 2008, specifically vowed to his followers angered over his campaign-season NSA reversal that he possessed “the firm intention — once I’m sworn in as president — to have my Attorney General conduct a comprehensive review of all our surveillance programs, and to make further recommendations on any steps needed to preserve civil liberties and to prevent executive branch abuse in the future” only makes that point a bit more vivid

ROLDO RIGHTS ON WHAT ELECTION…?

1459 by Jeff Hess

Roldo Bartimole writes:

A well-financed, well-run campaign, media neglect and a “What Election?” electorate proved a winner for the extension by 20 years of the original 1990 sin tax. Nothing seemed to stir this deadened citizenry. Not even a hand slipping in their pockets. For 20 years!

About 20 percent even bothered to vote.

The argument to “Keep Cleveland Strong” accompanied by a rash of positive public relations articles about downtown and an uptick in city pride, maybe even helped by the Playhouse Square chandelier fest days before the vote, helped turn the trick.

The media failure to even get the three wealthy owners on the record seeking the $270 million or more tax reveals the neglect particularly of the Plain Dealer and its leadership team – from Chris Quinn, who dictates day to day coverage – and Betsy Sullivan, who runs the editorial page. The men who got hundreds of millions Continue Reading »

SCHOOLGIRL SLAVES FOR ONLY $12 EACH…

This story just gets worse and worse

Boko Haram’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, has threatened to sell the captives into slavery and said militants would attack more schools and abduct more girls. The group’s name means “Western education is sinful”. In a separate atrocity this week militants reportedly shot at least 52 people in a remote village.

FREE CECILY…

0638 by Jeff Hess

Molly Knefel writes:

The verdict in the biggest Occupy related criminal case in New York City, that of Cecily McMillan, came down Monday afternoon. As disturbing as it is that she was found guilty of felony assault against Officer Grantley Bovell, the circumstances of her trial reflect an even more disturbing reality – that of normalized police violence, disproportionately punitive sentences (McMillan faces seven years in prison), and a criminal penal system based on anything but justice. While this is nothing new for the over-policed communities of New York City, what happened to McMillan reveals just how powerful and unrestrained a massive police force can be in fighting back against the very people with whom it is charged to protect.

McMillan was one of roughly 70 protesters arrested on March 17, 2012. She and hundreds of other activists, along with journalists like me, had gathered in Zuccotti Park to mark the six-month anniversary of the start of Occupy Wall Street. It was four months after the New York Police Department had evicted the Occupy encampment from the park in a mass of violent arrests.

When the police moved in to the park that night, in formation and with batons, to arrest a massive number of nonviolent protesters, the chaos was terrifying. Bovell claimed that McMillan elbowed him in the face as he attempted to arrest her, and McMillan and her defense team claim that Bovell grabbed her right breast from behind, causing her to instinctively react.

But the jury didn’t hear anything about the police violence that took place in Zuccotti Park that night

As we normalize a militarized police force and swallow the load of crap that is the Bush-Obama Security Scheme, those who stand up will get hammered down, but as the banner hanging from a Kent State window proclaimed in 1970: They can’t kill us all.

ROLDO RIGHTS ON STOP THE BIG LIE…

1609 by Jeff Hess

[Update at 0402 on 7 May–Well, this didn’t go well. The wealthy white suburbs outvoted
the working-poor black city: Issue No. 7 passed 101,717 to 78,741. JH]

roldo no on issue 7 140505

Roldo Bartimole writes:

Will the voters fall for the Big Lie again?

“Without Issue 7, the City and County could have to make deep cuts to important services, to pay for legally required upkeep.”

That’s what the Yes vote people put out as truth. It’s as much a lie as all the promises they made in 1990 to pass the original sin tax way back then.

The teams want exotic scoreboards and other electronic and revenue gimmicks that will bring them more revenue. This is where the big money will go. That’s why they haven’t given us a transparent list of what the $290 million over 20 years will go.

If they want this advertising-revenue upsurge via expensive electronic gadgets, they will pay for them if the public via a NO vote tells them, as they should, go to hell. Pay your own bills just as we do.

Last week County data showed that year-to-date revenue in 2014 from the sin tax revenue totaled $4,591,219. That would represent the first quarter of 2014. With four quarters to a year, it would represent some $18 million per year. Now we know collections vary quarter to quarter. But the $18 million figure for 20 years would represent a total of $360 million, more than any of the figures mentioned in any media has said. Maybe the economy is picking up.

By the way, we have paid patronage thus far in this 10-year addition of the sin tax $118,246,294. We paid another $128 million for the arts tax and thus far $222 million for the med mart tax. That’s getting to near the half billion dollar mark.

Money that could be spent elsewhere.

But the politicians and the corporate bosses cooperate to co-opt the money. What will this mean to local communities that need to raise taxes for real needs, like schools, safety, and other needed services in the coming year?

We just gave you hundreds of millions. We’re broke. No to the next school tax. It’s wasted money anyway. Not wasted like a few hundred million for ball games.

It’s way too much money to simply give – no questions asked – to Mr. Haslam, Mr. Gilbert and Mr. Dolan. The three silent cup-in-hand beggars financing the lies to get the tax passed.

Let’s not be suckers, people. Don’t listen to the Pee Dee and its mimickers on Tee Vee.

Make up your own mind whether the teams you built a $157 million arena, a $180 million baseball stadium, spent $41 million to prepare the sites, paid $12 million for the land, financed two money-losing parking garages at $42 million, and paid for a $13 million walkway from Tower City to Gateway now deserves hundreds of more millions from a city that can’t even keep you safe. Hell, can’t even repair the streets.

Don’t be fooled by the couple of million dollars the owners gave the TV stations to broadcast lies.

Don’t waste your money day after day for 20 years to provide comfort to these fakers.

Your kids should be worth more to you.

TO KNOW LIFE IS TO CHANCE RISK…

1206 by Jeff Hess

Mano Singham, easily one of the wisest men I have ever had the honor to know, writes:

Those who advocate shredding people’s constitutional protections and using barbaric methods like torture in order to ‘protect us’ and ‘keep us safe’ have the easy side of the argument because they are appealing to emotions like fear. Those of us who argue that living with some risk is the necessary consequence of living in a free society are appealing to the rational part of the brain and that is a harder sell.

As long as no further terrorist acts occur, the advocates of fear-based policies can claim that it is those awful measures that have prevented them. If an act should occur, then they can blame those of us who have tried to rein them in for lowering our defenses and claim that we need to increase these draconian measures. They have the advantage whatever happens, and glib supporters of the national security state know this and exploit it relentlessly.

Those who favor the rule of law and the preservation of liberties must be prepared for that kind of response. So let me be clear. I think that not only is it very possible that there will be other terrorist attacks in the future, I think it is almost inevitable. It is almost impossible to defend oneself against people who are that determined and have no scruples against choosing easy targets such as ordinary people going about their business, especially when our own policies and actions in starting wars and killing innocent people around the globe are inflaming anger and revenge.

The whole post is brilliant, but I particularly liked that Mano chose to quote from one of my favorite plays (and movies) Robert Bolt’s A Man For All Seasons, which:

is aimed at all those who think that it is perfectly fine to dismiss with laws and due process when we are dealing with people whom we are think are guilty of serious crimes.

In this scene William Roper, later to become the son-in-law of Thomas More, urges the pre-emptive arrest of someone, an act that More opposes because that person has not broken any law, who adds that even the Devil should be allowed to go free if he has broken no laws.

Here is the scene from the 1966 movie with Paul Scofield as Sir Thomas Moore and Corin Redgrave as William Roper.

I’ve often thought that as The Crucible was to the ’50s, so was Bolt’s work to the ’60s.
