Brandon Blackwell writes:
Irony stung the Occupy Cleveland movement in October 2011 when about a dozen of its members were arrested in Public Square.
Protesters were taken into custody for violating curfew near the statue of Cleveland’s 35th Mayor Tom L. Johnson — an effigy erected as a testament to free speech and assembly.
But a court decision has opened the door for Occupy Cleveland or anyone else to return to Public Square for late-night protests.
Tim Russo emails PD publisher Terrance Eggers:
Thank you for being responsive. Just saw today’s story, front page, where it belonged in the first place. Your reporter Brandon Blackwell, did an excellent job, with the exception of quoting Jonathan Adler, who is a right wing blogger more than he is a constitutional law expert. Kevin O’Neill at CSU Marshall College of Law would have been more appropriate. No matter though… you did yourselves proud.

This is the movie not to see…
Glenn Greenwald’s updates (at the bottom) are vital for understanding the meta of this film:
That so many reviewers walked away with a pro-torture message from the film – that torture was key to finding bin Laden – means that large numbers of viewers likely will as well, regardless of the after-the-fact claimed intent of the filmmakers. That, by itself, is highly problematic and worthy of commentary.
Spencer Ackerman concludes:
What endures on the screen are scenes that can make a viewer ashamed to be American, in the context of a movie whose ending scene makes viewers very, very proud to be American.

Blaise Pascal wrote:
When I have occasionally set myself to consider the different distractions of men, the pains and perils to which they expose themselves at court or in war, whence arise so many quarrels, passions, bold and often bad ventures, etc., I have discovered that all the unhappiness of men arises from one single fact, that they cannot stay quietly in their own chamber.
I see this as Pascal’s version of Siddhartha Gautama’s all suffering arises from desire. I note Pascal’s discovery because John Llewelyn uses the words as the introduction to his own endorsement of David Wood’s The Lure of the Writer’s Cabin.
My own experience of imagining my chamber began with reading Henry David Thoreau’s Walden when I was 15 and may have concluded with reading Anne Dillard’s Pilgrim At Tinker’s Creek some decade-and-a-half later. For me, my chamber is my desk, inherited from my paternal grandmother who, I believe, had it from her own Welsh grandfather. My fiction, with the exception of work done at workshops, has all been written at this desk and while it may sit someday in a cabin of my own construction, my desk defines my space regardless of where the four legs stand.
Someday I may build (or have built) my own writing cabin, but waiting for the perfect space is just another form of fear too many manifest as writer’s block. The master can write in the middle of Grand Central Station during the morning rush.
I strive for mastery.

Paul Krugman writes:
Let’s get one thing straight: America is not facing a fiscal crisis. It is, however, still very much experiencing a job crisis.
It’s easy to get confused about the fiscal thing, since everyone’s talking about the “fiscal cliff.” Indeed, one recent poll suggests that a large plurality of the public believes that the budget deficit will go up if we go off that cliff.
In fact, of course, it’s just the opposite: The danger is that the deficit will come down too much, too fast. And the reasons that might happen are purely political; we may be about to slash spending and raise taxes not because markets demand it, but because Republicans have been using blackmail as a bargaining strategy, and the president seems ready to call their bluff.
I would love to brand this bit of intelligent on the foreheads of every deficit hawk in Congress:
…the assertion that government spending creates jobs, but only if it goes to the military, doesn’t make sense.
