From left-to-right: Hugh Jackman, Clint Eastwood, Daniel Craig, Gabriel Byrne, Hugh Laurie, Daniel Day Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones and Ray Liotta.

In the longest running comment thread on Have Coffee Will Write, the discussion of Dark Tower: The Movie has now gone on for 13 months (14.2.7 to 6.3.8). In contemplating who should get the lead role of Roland Deschain I’ve assembled the eight suggestions so far. I agree with Pier-Luc and eight8inate, the character is all in the eyes.

Who do you think should get the part?

[Update 5 March 2009 — The decision has been made. According to reader Sandy Corkins, David Simmons has won the role.]

[Update 9 March 2009 — This thread is now one-year-old and still the conversation continues.]

The latest word is Javier Bardem. That one is interesting. I thought of Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman and Gabriel Byrne before coming here so maybe those makes sense if so many people think it. I think Liotta is too pretty and unfortunately typecast a bit as the inner city tough guy (but a good actor can always pull a rabbit out of is hat). I like DDL for though I see him as too tall and lanky for the part, the guy NEVER ceases to become someone else when he wants to. Only problem is, you’ll never get him to commit to a trilogy. He’s way too reclusive for that much exposure. Tommy Lee is a tough one and may be too old. I don’t know if he’s got the GRIT. I mean that’s what we’re really thinking of when we think of RD. GRIT…right? The one that totally caught me off guard but that I could totally see is Hugh Laurie. Do you think GRIT with Laurie? No, but you know he can play the roll of a dick! How about Josh Brolin? 20 years ago it would have HAD to have been Eastwood.

  2. Jim says:

Hugo Weaving! He’s got the look (worn, blue eyes, gruff.) He’s got a great voice, a strong and unemotional demeanor, and he’s one of the better actors out there.

  3. tim says:

timothy olyphant would be a great Roland.

    • tom says:

agree 100% as Seth bullock and raylon givens he just has a gunslinger look and demeanor. no Clint, too old. no Javier, just blah, no Daniel Craig, too short.

  4. Mary Jo says:

Just learned it went to Idris Elba. Did you see the film?

    • Jeff Hess says:

Yes, I watched the movie on DVD and while Elba did a credible job, the over all effort just sucked.

I felt pretty much the same way I did with the first attempts at bringing Lord Of The Rings to the big screen.
