NAOMI KLEIN ON THE GREAT TRANSITION

Changing the earth’s climate in ways that will be chaotic and disastrous is easier to accept than the prospect of changing the fundamental, growth-based, profit-seeking logic of capitalism.

The rest of us are going to have to quickly figure out how to turn “managed degrowth” into something that looks a lot less like the Great Depression and a lot more like what some innovative economic thinkers have take to calling “The Great Transition.” p. 89

It would have to begin with viewing the situation differently. At least in the developed world, as what to do with surplus productivity.

A lot of that has involved outsourcing actual production to spend more on advertising and financial bubbles. And the occasional catastrophic regime-changing exercises in the middle east and central Asia. The good thing is, we are too far away for the refugees to walk or take a boat: they all end up in Europe.
