Derf writes: I have to say, walking sauntering up on that stage to finally have one of those little statues handed to me, after 35 years as a comics pro, a grizzled warhorse of 56 years, is on my short list of career highlights. My acceptance speech, told with hand-lettered cue cards, frankly, brought the […]

Derf’s interpretation of George Bellows’ Stag at Sharkey’s.
Last year, while walking back from getting my morning coffee in my home town, I cut though a mini-park and saw a sign telling citizens that Marietta had adopted a more growing, less mowing policy to encourage a healthy environment. I think that is a great idea. I’ve written before about how the Cleveland Metroparks […]
A week ago Monday I wrote, in POLICE PWN LA TIMES, GET TED RALL FIRED… about The Los Angeles Times taking a dupe of a faked, 12-year-old audio tape as grounds to fire cartoonist Ted Rall. Rall has not taken the insult lightly. Sam Thielman, writing in Fired Los Angeles Times cartoonist hits back at […]
[Update at 0858 on 14 August: Chromosome answered my question. The circle is part of the WMCSM’s .5 child (note the plate to WMCSD’s left.) which makes my use of red here a bit prescient (and icky).] Usually I have no problem with Derf’s art, but I’ve been staring at White Middle Class Suburban Daughter’s […]
Newspaper owners, editors and assorted flunkies are running scared. They’re drowning in a rising tide of new media that has rendered them, at best, marginally valuable, and no step seems to extreme to keep their heads above the surface long enough to retire and run. The latest shameful, from-their-knees act, is to take a faked […]
John, Derf, Backderf writes: I’m happy to report that Trashed is delivered and in the can. All 240 pages of it. Took a bit longer to put the finishing touches on it, as it always does, and MAN am I sick of looking at these pages, but it’s completed at last. Here’s the wraparound cover […]
The mowing of lawns is the most worthless task I can think of. If not for concern that my neighbors would complain to me, or the city, about my waist-high grass, I would never mow. I’m not running a golf course here. Except to clear small areas—like the area around our picnic table and fire […]
Creativity is hard. Really, really hard. If you’re writing/painting/sculpting/drawing/scoring ideas faster than your fingers can move, here’s a clue: you’re producing drek. Some writer—just who is a matter of debate—observed that writing was easy, you just opened a view and bled onto the paper. I think I like Derf’s graphic version better.

[Update at 0441 on 13 January: Derf elaborates…] Derf is far from alone…
So where are all the patriot gun-toters? How come they’re not flocking to Fergusen like they did to Bundy’s Ranch or when they paraded around sleepy Medina, Ohio, on a Saturday morning, with ARs slung over their shoulders, terrifying shoppers and soccer moms? This is the REAL deal here, government thugs bringing the jackboot down […]
[O]ne week a month was always reserved for a True Story. It was a dose of realism that gave The City its pedigree. No matter how much the strip changed over nearly a quarter century, even after I dropped almost all my original characters and morphed a silly Gen X humor strip into a savage […]
